Vicarious Trauma: an emerging psychosocial hazard

In this seminar forensic psychiatrist, Assoc. Prof Andrew Carroll, will discuss the concept of ‘vicarious trauma’ and briefly explore the psychobiology of empathic responding. Assoc. Prof Carroll will also discuss the landmark case of Kozarov v Victoria (2022) 273 CLR 115 and outline a model for a pragmatic approach to the challenges posed by psychosocial hazards like that encountered by the appellant.

Assoc. Prof. Carroll has worked as a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist in Australia for over two decades. He is a Director of ‘Our Curious Minds’ : a mental health training and consultancy company with a special focus on enhancing safety for services working with consumers with needs arising from complex trauma. He also has a busy medicolegal practice, conducting assessment work in both the criminal and civil fields.  He maintains a treatment role at Forensicare, for whom he works in two prisons in country Victoria, He is Adjunct Associate Professor at the Centre for Forensic Behavioural Science (Swinburne University of Technology) and regularly publishes on various topics including psychiatric aspects of sentencing.
